
Aromatherapy for Romantic & Sensual Mood
There is a melancholy in the romantic mood that creates a feeling of fantasy, something dreamlike. Romantic mood is different from erotic or sensual. Romantic behavior tells us that he/she loves and cares us. While sensual mood is more alive and passionate.
There is a number of essential oils that you can play with to achieve your own booster either for romantic or sensual mood. You can choose according to your specific needs and creat your own blend for the occassion.
Rose Otto is the classic romantic essential oil.
Marjoram and Benzoin relax when what you desire is more an embrace and less sex.
Ylang Ylang and Rosewood are exotic and sweet while Salvia creates euphoria and romance.
Some ideas of blending can include:
- 2 drops Rose Otto, 2 drops Benzoin, 3 drops Frankincense, 5 drops Bergamot
- 5 drops Ylang Ylangand 7 drops Citrus (Lemon, Wild Orange or Bergamot)

Brief description of suggested essential oils
Rose Otto Essential oil (Rosa damascena) “the Queen of Flowers”
Its sweet and floral aroma makes it uplifting and stimulating to the mind. Rose is tender, optimistic and soothing. It is an amazing addition to massage oil and aromatic baths and is extensively used in mood aromas. Using rose even in small amounts can help us release fears associated with intimacy, trust and possessiveness. It can also help us integrate our male and female energies which are key to becoming “whole” and balanced. Rose Otto is the classic essential oil for a romantic atmosphere.
Ylang-Ylang Essential oil (Cananga odorata)
It has a faintly sweet floral scent similar to gardenia or plumeria. It has been used as an aphrodisiac and used to cover the beds of newly married couples in India on their wedding night. Ylang Ylang can help a woman feel more in the mood and men tend to respond well to the scent. It promotes romance and has long been used to calm anxiety, fear, frigidity and improve self esteem.
Sandalwood Essential Oil (Santalum Album)
It has a balsamic, woody aroma so is a great choice if you don’t particularly like floral fragrances. Calming, grounding, aphrodisiac. It awakens sensuality, invokes calmness and deep relaxation to allow for greater intuition and sense of awareness, particularly when opening up to and learning to love. It is an ancient oil that is well known for its meditative and relaxing properties; it is often used in incense in churches and temples. It is a base note oil and is now quite expensive. Add a drop of sandalwood oil to a carrier oil for massage or to your bath for a sensual and romantic encounter.
Neroli Essential Oil (Citrus Aurantium)
Neroli Essential Oil with its calming and balancing emotional effects, enhances our ability to stay in the present and get out of the loop reminiscing the past or worrying about the future. In situations of panic and fear, our body and mind are separated. So it gently supports us to come back and use our forgotten power to live and manifest things in the present by opening the heart and releasing emotions such as these of powerless and self imposed restrictions.
Lemon Essential Oil (Citrus lemon)
Its light and clean sence aroma, is very uplifting to the body and mind while it improves focus. It is used to relieve stress, improve mood, promote sleep and ease symptoms of depression.
Because it is cleansing to the mind and spirit, it releases inner patterns and open the heart center. As a result it creates joy and hopefulness with clear thought.
Lemon Verbena Essential Oil
Lemon verbena is a rare and rather expensive essential oil. It has a fresh lemony smell and taste. The leaves of Lemon verbena have sedative and aphrodisiac agents that may improve your mood. Lemon verbena oil plays a vital role in improving liver function. Liver is the organ where all our blocked emotions exist.
Bergamot Essential Oil
A drop of Bergamot essential oil on our wrists is enough for its aroma to give us joy and open our heart. Its sweet and fruity aroma is uplifting and relaxing. Bergamot supports us to release the need to be in complete control so that we can flow with life more easily.
When we can relax and trust the universe to handle details of any life situation, we release the fear of the unknown and become clear about our own mission. It opens the heart chakra and eases stress and tension in mind, body and soul. A drop on the heart supports us release patterns and embrace relationships (with self and others).
The essence of Bergamot supports us when dealing with dependency or compulsiveness that may be associated with smoking, drugs or alcohol. In addition to its energy-boosting properties, bergamot can also induce relaxation by releasing emotional pain. It is calming and often used to treat depression by providing energy.

Bitter Orange Essential Oil (Citrus aurantium)
It is obtained from the peel of bitter orange tree fruits the same tree with Neroli Essential Oil which comes from the flowers. The therapeutic properties of bitter orange oil are considered to be very similar to sweet orange.
On emotional level bitter orange essential oil is extremely uplifting and energizing for the body yet calming to the mind and emotions. It can be extremely helpful in easing stress and anxiety. has calming, uplifting and stimulating properties, helping to revive and energize a tired spirit.

Sweet Orange Essential Oil (Citrus sinensis)
It is derived from the outer peel of the common orange fruit. Its aroma reminds us of happy moments and brings pleasant thoughts to mind. It creates a happy, relaxed feeling and works as a mood lifter, perfect for depression symptoms or chronic anxiety. Research suggests that the essential oil of orange helps reduce pulse rate and salivary cortisol that is secreted when one is in a state of anxiety. To lift your mood and relax, diffuse Sweet Orange Essential Oil or add a few drops to your shower wash or perfume, or even inhale it directly. It’s a great essential oil for balancing hormones since it can help turn off reactions from stress hormones like cortisol. Clove Essential Oil (Eugenia caryophyllata)

Clove is said to provide insight into our emotional discomfort. It helps us reflect on the causes of our blockage patterns and assists us in releasing them because they no longer serve us. It promotes happiness and positive feelings.
Clove Essential oil can be mixed with carrier oils and other essential oils for an aromatherapy massage. It helps lower stress and tension in the body and is considered a powerful aphrodisiac. 2-3 drops of the oil in warm water can help increase sex drive, boost blood circulation in the sexual organs, and prevent premature ejaculation.

Benzoin Essential Oil (Styrax benzoin)

Benzoin is a popular ingredient in incense, and it has been used in this manner for thousands of years. The Ancient Mayans used Benzoin for fumigation and in incense made to chase off malevolent spirits. It can cleanse and purify the spirit. It helps to release the energy of suppression and feelings of being eliminated or annihilated. It promotes feelings of liberation, freedom and emancipation. It is a perfect choice to inhale when you want to meditate and work on your root chakra, one of the body’s energy centers that is associated with grounding and security.
Jasmine Essential Oil
Jasmine Essential Oil (Jasminum officinale): the “queen of the night” with its strong scent during the evening hours is known for its seductive qualities. It is very expensive because of the enormous amounts of flowers needed to produce a small amount of essential oil. The flowers have to be gathered at night because their aroma is more powerful after dark. Its sweet and floral aroma is uplifting and relaxing. It has been used for emotional balance for hundreds of years. Its primary use has been to ease stress and to bring on euphoria and happiness.
Jasmine essential oil is relaxing and emotionally warming, a powerful antidepressant of a stimulating nature, especially supportive if there is lethargy or a lack of confidence. It is calming in stressful situations and centering.
Even in small amounts it can be very helpful to release sexuality fears associated with issues such as intimacy, feeling of unworthiness and being used. It will also attune us to the spiritual nature of sexuality.
Marjoram Essential Oil
It is sometimes referred to as “Sweet Marjoram”. Its spicy and woody aroma is mentally strengthening and relaxing. It calms the nervous tension and it is high in antioxidants.
Origanum comes from a Greek words “oros” and “ganos” meaning “joy of the mountains”. It is also called the “happiness herb”. Greeks and Romans associated Marjoram with love and happiness, beauty, the arts and fertility. A crown of marjoram flowers was made to crown and honor newly married couples. So, it will be a good addition to your blend for a romantic mood.
It is mentally strengthening and relaxing while calms the nervous tension. The Greeks associated marjoram with not only love and happiness, but also with transition through physical death. So, if we see death as a metaphor for transformation, Marjoram Essential Oil can assist us if we feel disconnected, insecure and unsupported to transform these feelings. This enables us to accept and love ourselves more fully in a balanced, healthy manner.
Patsouli Essential Oil
The plant has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine as a stimulant, tonic and antiseptic.
It is a very supportive essential oil for depression as it soothes feelings of sadness or loss and fills with new hope. It uplifts the mood, drives away disappointment, and relaxes tension. Patchouli has an impact on hormones and other various chemical reactions in the body and mind. It stimulates the release of pleasure hormones like serotonin and dopamine and this makes it helpful for feelings of anxiety, anger, and sadness.
Patchouli essential oil also, has the reputation of being a natural aphrodisiac. It is good for both men and women for treating sexual problems including impotence, loss of libido, disinterest in sex, erectile dysfunctions, frigidity, and sexual anxiety by stimulating the sexual hormones, estrogen, and testosterone, which boost the sex drive.
On physical level Patchouli can be used to treat acne, cracked skin, certain types of eczema, fungal infections (athletes’ foot), some skin allergies and even dandruff.
Frankincense Essential Oil
This oil delivers tranquil energy along with spiritual grounding. It is particularly helpful to use during yoga and general meditation as it helps deepen meditation and quiet the mind. It is suitable for treating depression and anxiety because it provides a calming and tranquil energy as well as spiritual grounding. Frankincense Essential Oil helps reduce stress reactions and negative emotions.
Physically it helps boost immune system function and prevents illness, may help fight cancer or deal with chemotherapy side effects, astringent and can kill harmful germs and bacteria, heals skin and prevents signs of aging, balances hormone levels, eases digestion, acts as a sleep aid and helps decrease inflammation and pain.
Mixed with bergamot and lavender oils in a 1:1 ratio in an aroma hand massage, Frankincense Essential Oil was found to have a positive effect on pain and depression in hospice patients with terminal cancer in a Keimyung University study in Korea.
Cinnamon Essential Oil
It is associated with the sun and fire and used most commonly in spells for prosperity, love, success, protection, strength, and healing. The Romans believed the Phoenix built its nest from Cinnamon wood, and so it is a natural choice for those working with the fire element. Also, commonly used for spiritual protection and to attract wealth.
Cinnamon has a history of use in sex magic with its natural energetic warmth and sensuality.
Vetiver Essential Oil
It has a very pleasant, mild, earthy, and musky smell which has a cooling effect on the body and the mind. It promotes a tranquil, grounding and reassuring energy. It is often used in trauma supporting with self-awareness, calmness and stabilization. It is a natural tonic for the nervous system. It decreases jitteriness and hypersensitivity and is also useful in panic attacks and shock.
It also enhances the libido and arouses feelings of sexual desire. It is a remedy for most sexual disorders like frigidity, lack of libido, and impotence.
