Aromatherapy for Moods & Emotions
A truly charming aspect of any treatment with essential oils is the way in which their aroma can affect our mood. They affect us emotionally and are awaken deep feelings within us. Fragrances awaken sensual instincts, draw nostalgic memories and allow our imagination to be alive.
When we inhale an aromatic particle, like that of an essential oil, it dissolves in the mucus at the tip of the nose and then comes into contact with olfactory cells. Nerve fibers bound to the olfactory cells then carry the aromatic message to the olfactory bulb in the cerebral cortex. The mood created by a particular smell has a lot to do with the limbic system in the body, and this is the oldest and most ancient system in the brain.
Furthermore, in Chinese traditional medicine it is said that lungs open up (are expressed) on our skin. This has also, been proven from research done at the University of Thessaly in Greece. Farmers who used fertilizers for their fields believed that by using masks they would avoid inhaling the deadly chemicals. It was proven that uncovered skin had the same results, even worse, as inhaling these chemicals.
During an aromatherapy massage, the essential oils pass through our lungs and they distribute them throughout our body sending specific messages to our brain.
When we smell an essential oil that is pleasing, we feel a satisfaction that is perceived by the mind and soothes it. At the same time, there is also an effect on our body’s physiology, independent of the sense of smell. This also shows the importance of using essential oils that are pleasant to you. If the aroma of an essential oil is unpleasant to you despite its potential beneficial effects on the body, its overall effectiveness will be reduced.
The action of essential oils in mind and emotions is complex and delicate. They tend to balance and bring the body into a normal state rather than simply stimulate or calm it, and there is a similar effect on emotions. Each Essential oil has its own personal character and a complementary relationship and proximity to some parts of our body, mind and emotions.
